Nyquist tabbed Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week

MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS) – After recording a pair of victories on the mound this week, Mercer pitcher Eric Nyquist has been named the Southern Conference’s Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.

The weekly honor is the second of Nyquist’s career and the baseball program’s second pitcher-of-the-week accolade this season.

Nyquist showed no signs of rust in his first two starts of the season, displaying why he was a Preseason First Team All-SoCon selection. The senior right-hander finished the week with a 2-0 record, while holding opponents to just one run over 14 total innings of work with seven strikeouts.

He opened the week with five dominant innings in the Bears’ 4-1 victory over Georgia Southern. The senior right-hander did not allow a runner past second base, while limiting the Eagles to two hits in the contest.

Nyquist followed that performance with his first complete game of the year, facing just five over the minimum in a four-hit effort during Sunday’s 7-1 victory over Harvard.

The Alpahretta, Ga. native boasts a 2-0 record and a 0.56 ERA in three total appearances this season, while holding opposing batters to a .137 average.

Mercer will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10, when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla. for a two-game series with Florida A&M. Tuesday’s first pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Moore-Kittles Field.
