Macon officials seeking families of 232 unclaimed cremated remains

"I think it's sad that they've been left here, for us to store, instead of being picked up by one of their family members," said Cosper.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Macon-Bibb County is asking families and loved ones to come forward to claim the cremated remains of people currently in the county’s care. Any unclaimed remains will be respectfully memorialized in a dedicated garden at Historic Rose Hill Cemetery.  

There are 232 cremated remains unclaimed in Macon, raising questions about if families know what happened to their loved ones. That’s why county officials are working to get individuals back to their families and have a proper burial  

Archive & Records Center Manager for Macon-Bibb County, Kittie Cosper, says the remains are collected from funeral homes when families do not come forward, leaving the county responsible for storing them. 

“When they don’t get picked up at the funeral homes, Leon gets them and picks them up; and of course he doesn’t have the room in his office, so we store them down here,” said Cosper. 

Cosper says they hold the cremated remains for one year before moving forward with plans to scatter them. They’re hoping public notice will help families come forward. 

“With the ones were about to scatter, they have to go through the county’s attorney’s office. Because these are all listed in the paper, that were going to scatter them. So, there all put in the paper now, and when people read the paper and they see it’s their loved one, then they contact the county’s attorney’s office, then they will contact me, and then I release them to their family,” said Cosper.  

She says each unclaimed set of remains represents a person with a life and a story, raising questions about who they were.

“When we come by or even scattering them, we wonder what did this person do? Do they have a family? What did they do for a living? What kind of person were they? I think everybody has that question,” said Cosper. 

Anyone seeking to claim a loved one’s cremated remains must submit a written response to the Bibb County Superior Court Clerk’s office. The response must include contact information, the name of the deceased, and the person’s connection to them. The deadline to file is November 23.

Remains that go unclaimed will be memorialized at Historic Rose Hill Cemetery.
