NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne signs autographs in Macon
“It’s neat to come out and see some fans you don’t normally see,” he says.
People like Ashley Lee and her dad, David, from Gray.
“She had to stay at school for a test today,” David says. “So I had to get my oldest daughter to come down here and stand in line at 7 o’clock this morning to get the ticket to shoot down here in time enough to see him so we wouldn’t miss it.”
Kahne drives for Hendrick Motorsports–one of the Sprint Cup Series’ top teams. He has 16 wins in his 11-year cup career, but hasn’t won a race this season. He says that could change in the races leading up to the Chase.
“We’ve been able to win at all of them,” Kahne says. “So four good tracks for us. Hopefully we can do really well with the points through that point where maybe we don’t have to worry about wins, but at the same time we definitely want to win. That’d be the easiest way to make our way into the Chase.”
Kahne’s middle Georgia fans are hoping he can take care of business on Labor Day Weekend.
“It’d be cool to see him win,” Ashley Lee says. “Because last time he won at Atlanta, I missed it.”
That was in 2009. Since then, Kahne’s average finish there is 26th, but he still calls the track one of his favorites.
“It’s wide and rough and fast,” he says. “Tires fall off, so you’re car slides around a lot and you need to look for lanes that you need to find speed in, find grip in. So I’ve always just really enjoyed racing there. It’s been a great track.”
