FPD’s Brady McHugh shines in state title series

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The FPD baseball team captured their first state title in 16 years this past weekend as the Vikings blew by rival Stratford in two games. It was FPD’s third straight appearance in the state title series, and the Vikings’ hunger for a championship was on full display as soon as the squad hit the diamond in Statesboro. Senior Brady McHugh made a sparkling defensive play at second base in the top of the first, and then drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the inning with a deep drive off the left-center field wall. McHugh followed that at-bat with a towering homer later in the game, helping lead the Vikings to a 7-0 shutout win Thursday night.

Just a few short days after being crowned a state champ, McHugh was back on the the diamond Tuesday for the final time in his high school career as he participated in the GIAA All-Star Game in Macon. McHugh was adamant that the losses to Brookstone in back-to-back seasons help make the destination for this year’s team even clearer.

“This is gonna be the last taste of high school baseball we ever get and it was really nice to go out with a bang,” McHugh said. “Coming off of last year for sure, we knew this was the final destination and we wanted to do it.”

McHugh and the Vikings brought a state title back to FPD for the firs time since 2010. The senior will now start preparing for the next chapter of his academic and athletic career as he plans to attend East Tennessee State University in the fall.
