49th Macon Labor Day Road Race brings runners to city streets

The Hinson family, longtime participants and owners of Blossom Nutrition, served drinks to runners at the finish line.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Runners took to the streets of Macon Monday for the 49th annual Macon Labor Day Road Race, while one local family that usually competes spent this year helping runners refuel at the finish line.

The annual Macon Tracks event included 5K and 10K races, along with a 1-mile Fun Run at Carolyn Crayton Park. The 5K and 10K courses ran through Macon before finishing at the park.

The Hinson family, owners of Blossom Nutrition, swapped their running shoes for healthy drinks, serving refreshing beverages to runners as they crossed the finish line. The family, who typically participates in the race themselves, said they wanted to give back to the community and help keep runners refreshed and energized throughout the event.

“So, our family has been running the Labor Day race since they were toddlers,” Hinson said. “My daughter ran in high school, cross country, and in college at Middle Georgia. And we were like, ‘Hey we’ve always run it, let’s help support them in a different way, so we’re here as Blossom Nutrition this year for the first time.”

She says they serve teas, low-carb drinks, healthy coffee and protein drinks.

“Blossom Nutrition is kind of a healthy option for people that are trying to lose weight, get hydrated or get some extra protein in their diet,” Hinson said.

Her husband, Scott Hinson, has had Type 1 diabetes since he was 14 years old and says giving back is what matters to him most.

“We like to offer products that are low in calories and low in sugar. And so, with the hydration here this morning, it’s been key a lot of the runners, to be able to come in and hydrate.”
