UPDATE 10/24 (5:30 p.m.) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says Jakaylan Williams, who was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the case of the four missing Bibb County inmates, is still being held without bond.

The sheriff’s office confirmed in a news release Tuesday evening Williams was in possession of the blue Dodge Challenger used to help inmates escape last week.

According to the sheriff’s office, he’s charged with aiding or permitting another to escape lawful custody or confinement, theft by receiving stolen property and probation violation. He was also arrested on warrants for aggravated assault, criminal trespass and battery family violence on an unrelated case.

The sheriff’s office news release, sent at 5:30 p.m., mentioned Williams was being held without bond, despite jail records showing he had been released on bond at 4:16 p.m.

Responding to multiple commenters who asked on a sheriff’s office Facebook post about Williams being released on bond earlier Tuesday, the sheriff’s office wrote the following:

“Mr. Williams has been transferred to an undisclosed law enforcement facility and is being held without bond.”

UPDATE (10/24 4:37 p.m.): Jakaylen Williams has bonded out of jail after being arrested on Tuesday in connection with the case of four escaped inmates.

We are working to confirm those.

UPDATE 10/23 (4:30 p.m.): Bibb County deputies identified 23-year-old Christian Demond Williams as the man who was shot on Monday morning.

A sheriff’s office news release says the U.S. Marshals Service knocked on the door of an apartment, and a “male subject” answered from behind the closed door.

“U.S. Marshals then announced themselves and were met by gunfire that came through the closed apartment door,” the news release stated.

Once inside, deputies say a “subject” told them a second male subject was down from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The person who was shot was identified as Williams, who deputies say was reported to have been kidnapped on March 6, hours before he was due in court for his 2021 murder charges.

Williams is in critical condition.

“Christian Williams involvement in the incident of the four escape inmates is currently under investigation,” the release stated.

ORIGINAL STORY 10/23 (12:30 p.m.):

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A man was hospitalized Monday morning following a shooting at The Pines on Vineville apartments.

It happened as law enforcement officers sought information related to four inmates who escaped the Bibb County Jail last week.

Sheriff David Davis confirmed Monday members of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force were on site around 7:30 a.m. to question a person of interest connected with the escaped inmates. Task force members then heard gunfire from inside the apartment, according to Davis. Authorities immediately called for SWAT backup.

Upon SWAT’s arrival, someone inside the apartment informed law enforcement that someone was down inside. Law enforcement then discovered a man with a gunshot wound, which they say they believe to be self-inflicted.

Davis said the person who was shot is not one of the fugitives.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is now investigating.
