10U softball team from Jones County advances to Dixie Youth World Series

GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –  It’s picture day for the Jones County National League Dixie Youth 10 and under softball team.

“I already took 50 billion,” one girl says as the parents snap their pictures at the recreation complex off Highway 18.  “My eyes are about to fall out of my head.”

“They’re an active bunch, so standing still for them is hard,” head coach Rick Trefelner says.  “They would rather be running around the field and doing stuff out here than standing still for a picture.”

They just won the Dixie Youth state title.  Now, they’re hoping to win the World Series.

“We’re going to Atoka, Tennessee,” Maeleigh Price says.

“I expect that we have a 50/50 chance of winning,” Taylor Trefelner says.

“We have really good hitting and fielding,” Stephanie Youngblood says.  “So I think we got that.”

They have experience, too.  Just last year, Jones county’s 8 and Under team made it to the World Series. Many of the girls from that team are on this one.

“It was really fun,” Brianna Edmonson says.  “And it was really hard, kind of, because there were a lot of teams that were really good.”

Most of them have played together so long that when you ask them about their relationships with one another, they sound like sisters.

“We just have fun with each other,” Maggie Glover says. “Most of the time.”

They’ll probably remember playing in the World Series the rest of their lives. So, are they nervous, or do they have it in the bag?

“I think we got it,” Megan Hamilton says.

The girls leave for Tennessee July 25.  To raise money, they’ll have a car wash July 19 at Walgreen’s in Gray.
