Vacant apartment building catches fire on Mercer University Drive
Firefighters moved outside as conditions deteriorated and used an elevated stream from a ladder truck to extinguish the fire.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A vacant two-story apartment building caught fire Wednesday night on Mercer University Drive, according to the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department.
Lead fire investigator Kyle Murray tells 41NBC firefighters were called to the 4000 block of Mercer University Drive around 8:45 p.m. after receiving a report of a possible grass fire.
When crews arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the apartment building. Firefighters entered the building to fight the fire and search for anyone who might have been inside.
As the fire spread and conditions inside deteriorated, commanders moved firefighters outside and switched to a defensive operation. Crews used an elevated water stream from a ladder truck to bring the fire under control and extinguish it.
The fire department says no one was found inside the building and all firefighters returned safely.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
