Sheriff: Armed standoff ends with suspect dead in Telfair County
The sheriff’s office says the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a multi-agency standoff response.

TELFAIR COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after deputies responding to a threats call were met with gunfire Sunday afternoon in Telfair County, according to Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson.
A post on the sheriff’s Facebook page Monday said deputies responded to a complaint involving reported threats made by another person.
According to Davidson, after speaking with the complainant, deputies went to a property on Studstill Road off Temperance Road to contact the suspect.
Davidson says deputies were “immediately met with gunfire” when they arrived at the property. Deputies retreated to a safe location and called for additional assistance.
Law enforcement agencies from multiple surrounding counties responded to the shooting. The Georgia State Patrol SWAT team and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were also called to assist.
Davidson says negotiators tried to get the suspect to surrender by phone, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
Deputies and tactical teams later entered the home and found the suspect suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Davidson. The suspect died from the injury.
No deputies or other first responders were injured.
In the statement, Davidson described the gunfire as an “ambush-styled attack” on deputies.
The sheriff also said communication problems complicated the response because the shooting happened in an area with limited cellphone and radio service.
The suspect has not been identified, and the shooting remains under investigation.
