Otis Redding Memorial Bridge unveiled to residents in Jones County

GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The man known for singing “sittin’ on the dock of the bay“, now has a bridge named after him.

The Otis Redding Memorial Bridge is located over Highway 11 in Jones County.

Karla Redding-Andrews said she is so grateful for the Gray community honoring her dad’s legacy with a bridge.

“It’s amazing that even after 50 years, your hometown still wants to honor you, so the citizens must really respect and love us as a family as well as love my dad and his legacy,” Redding-Andrews said.

David Jones came up with the idea of naming the bridge, that’s located above Highway 11, after Otis Redding.

“It only seemed, you know, appropriate to name the bridge after one of the most famous musicians, not from Jones County but in the world you know,” Jones said.

And thanks to Jones, the Redding family has something to look at each day they travel on Highway 11.

“We come down Highway 11, which is behind us, to get to Macon Georgia, which is where we work every single day, so it’s great to be able to see that,”Redding-Andrews said.

And if Redding were alive to see this bridge, his daughter says she thinks he’d love it.

“You know I think that he would be so humbled and so appreciative. So this would mean the world to him. I’m sure it’d bring a tear to his eye,” she said.

So instead of sitting on the dock of the bay, you can travel to Redding’s bridge, in Gray.
