Narcan Available at Scott’s Health Mart Pharmacy on June 9th
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Opioid overdoses can be stopped with a drug called Narcan.
“One of the major side effects of opioid overdoses is respiratory depression or it stops your breathing and Narcan reverses that,” Dr. Bryan Scott said.
Dr. Scott is the Pharmacy Manager of Scott’s Health Mart Pharmacy on Pio Nono Ave.
He said there will be Narcan available over the counter Friday.
“We do see that it’s becoming a bigger situation and that we do need to have some just to be a resource to the community,” Dr. Scott said.
He said it’s important for the community to be able to have access to Narcan for a number of reasons.
“You may have young people experimenting or people who are addicted because they were on pain killers because of a bad situation,” Dr. Scott said. “It would be a tragedy if these people are dying because they didn’t have access to life saving measures.”
Dr. Scott said it’s important to know that Narcan only helps with opioid overdoses. It cannot help with a cocaine or methamphetamine overdose.
He said someone who has overdosed has noticeable symptoms.
“You may notice them have very very shallow breaths or slow breaths. They may have a gurgling sound. Also, pinpoint pupils is another sign,” he said.
Dr. Scott said Narcan helps with overdoses, but it’s still important to call 911.
