Mandatory Evacuation of 6 Coastal Georgia Counties
MACON, Georgia. (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has issued a mandatory evacuation of six coastal counties. These counties include Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Glynn and Camden. The six counties are located east of Interstate 95, along the Georgia coastline.
There are several shelters activated across middle Georgia, however only two are open as of 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hepzibah Children’s Home in Bibb County off Zebulon Road is currently open and accepting evacuees in need of shelter. Fire Station #6 off of U.S. Highway 341 in Peach County is also open.
Governor Deal has activated 45 members of the Georgia National Guard to assist state and local public safety and transportation officials. Governor Deal notes that it is important for Georgians to remain calm and informed on Hurricane Matthew’s path.
Hurricane Matthew is expected to remain its Category 4 strength as it travels up the east coast of Florida near Georgia throughout the day Friday.
A news conference will be held today at 2 p.m., as Governor Deal provides updates on the weather and how the state is preparing for Hurricane Matthew.
