Jones County schools closed Monday; Gray boil water advisory expected through at least Tuesday

GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — All Jones County schools will be closed Monday, September 21, as a water disruption affects Gray, where a boil water advisory is expected to remain in effect until at least Tuesday.

The school district announced the closure Sunday, citing a water main break. The Gray Fire Department said in a Facebook post Sunday night that city crews were still working to identify the source of the water system issue.

Residents throughout Gray are experiencing low water pressure or complete outages, according to the fire department.

The department said residents should boil water before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth or other consumption until the advisory is officially lifted. Tuesday is not a confirmed end date.

Residents are also being asked to conserve water and limit nonessential use as service and pressure become available.

The fire department said it has staged fire apparatus at nursing homes and other areas of need within Gray to help maintain emergency response capabilities.

In a separate Facebook post, the Jones County Water Department clarified that the City of Gray and Jones County operate separate water systems. The county system was not experiencing an outage, according to the post.

The county department said no estimated restoration time was available from the city when it posted its update.

Local businesses are also affected. Owner Justin Kelly said in social media posts that Dairy Queen and Slim Chickens would not be able to open Monday due to the boil advisory.

The school district said it would share additional updates as they become available.
