Democrats prepare to take control of Congress following historic midterm victories

(NBC)- Democratic leaders are preparing to take control of both chambers of Congress following Tuesday’s historic midterm election victories, promising to address rising costs while preparing for potential clashes with President Donald Trump.
“It wasn’t simply a blue wave. It was an American tsunami,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats are focused on delivering economic relief to Americans.
“We have five words for the American people: relief is on the way,” Schumer said.
Democratic leaders say they intend to address the affordability concerns that helped drive voters to the polls, despite Trump’s threats to make extensive use of his presidential veto power.
“We are going to work hard to drive costs down with the president or without him. Period,” Schumer said.
Meanwhile, Republicans are assessing the reasons behind their significant election losses.
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz compared the results to previous political setbacks.
“It was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election. It was a Watergate level repudiation,” Cruz said.
Vice President JD Vance appeared to distance himself from Trump while discussing the election results in a lengthy social media post.
“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote.
Trump partially agreed, acknowledging that the conflict involving Iran contributed to higher gasoline prices.
“I think it’s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term,” Trump said.
However, the president defended his administration’s actions, arguing that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon justified the decision.
“If I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again because long term, it’s the only answer. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
As Democrats prepare to assume control of Congress, they face the challenge of working with a Republican president while also pursuing investigations into potential corruption involving his administration.
California Democratic Representative Robert Garcia raised concerns about the president’s family benefiting financially while Americans struggle with rising costs.
“This family is billions richer as the American public struggles,” Garcia said.
The possibility of renewed congressional investigations has also raised questions about whether Trump could face a third impeachment.
When asked whether he was concerned about that possibility, Trump responded, “Not even a little bit.”
Democrats will now face the challenge of advancing their legislative priorities while navigating opposition from the White House and determining how aggressively to pursue congressional oversight.
