DA: Armed burglar sentenced after Macon teen escaped and called 911

Prosecutors say the family’s then-18-year-old daughter escaped with one of the man's guns and called 911 before officers arrested him inside the home.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A man who broke into a Macon family’s home while armed with two guns was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years, according to the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

33-year-old Jarvis Edwards will serve the first 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. He pleaded guilty before jury selection to first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the DA’s office.

Prosecutors say Edwards forced his way through the home’s rear door around 8 a.m. on July 22, 2023 and demanded money and drugs.

The family’s then-18-year-old daughter escaped with one of Edwards’ guns and called 911, according to prosecutors.

Responding officers found Edwards asleep on a bed and arrested him. Prosecutors say officers found a victim’s driver’s license, jewelry and loose change belonging to the family in Edwards’ pockets.

“No one should ever have to endure what this family experienced in their own home,” District Attorney Anita Howard said. “This defendant broke into their home armed with guns while under the influence of drugs. Their daughter’s courage in escaping and calling for help is remarkable. We are so grateful no one was physically harmed.”
