Prosecutors seek to revoke David Pitts’ 2023 bond after Carolyn Crayton Park charges
Pitts posted a $30,000 bond in August 2023 while facing charges connected to the Baymont Inn & Suites double shooting.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Bibb County prosecutors are asking a judge to revoke a $30,000 bond that David Vincent Pitts had been out on since 2023 after he was charged in the Carolyn Crayton Park shooting that injured 12 people early Sunday.
According to the state’s motion to revoke bond, Pitts was arrested July 24, 2023, on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct. A judge granted Pitts a $30,000 bond the next day.
As conditions of his release, Pitts was ordered not to violate Georgia law and not to possess dangerous weapons or firearms, according to the motion. Pitts later posted bond and was released from the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center on August 6, 2023.
Those charges stemmed from the July 2023 Baymont Inn & Suites double shooting previously reported by 41NBC on Riverside Drive in Macon. Pitts was one of three people charged after a 62-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were shot.
A Bibb County grand jury indicted Pitts on January 8, 2024, on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The state’s filing says Pitts remained on bond while those charges were pending.
Court records show Pitts did not appear for his October 8, 2024 arraignment, and a bench warrant was issued. His attorney later told the court Pitts didn’t receive the arraignment notice until after the hearing and contacted his attorney once he received it. The state consented to lifting the warrant, and a judge granted the request on November 5, 2024.
Pitts’ 2023 case remains open.
Pitts was arrested Monday in connection with the Carolyn Crayton Park shooting investigation. He is charged with 12 counts of aggravated assault as a party to a crime. Pitts and Jaquez Bailey, who also faces 12 aggravated assault counts, were denied bond Tuesday in the new case. Pitts is among five people arrested in connection with the shooting.
In its motion filed Tuesday, the District Attorney’s Office accuses Pitts of violating the conditions of his 2023 bond by “participating in another shooting involving firearms” while awaiting trial. Prosecutors argue the new allegations also show Pitts poses a significant danger and a significant risk of committing another felony while awaiting trial.
The state is asking the court to revoke Pitts’ bond in the 2023 case and keep him in the custody of the Bibb County Sheriff pending the final disposition of that case.
A bond hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. October 8 before Superior Court Judge Connie Williford. Pitts’ trial in the 2023 case is currently scheduled for October 12.
