Crawford County keeps both deputy coroners

KNOXVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – On Tuesday night, Crawford County Commissioners discussed the coroner’s proposed budget.

Coroner Allen O’Neal said he’s not getting everything he needs to do his job properly.

He’s in the process of filing a lawsuit against the Crawford County Commissioners for not giving him the tools he needs.

This pending lawsuit made it difficult to discuss the full budget in detail.

Only one of the deputy coroners was at risk of losing his job.

“To my understanding, they said that they were putting my deputy coroner back in the budget until litigation was through on the other issues,” said O’Neal.

Commissioners said it was possible to bring another medical examiner from a surrounding county instead of keeping both deputy coroners. O’Neal said he would not approve of this.

“They want me to ask another coroner, out of another county, to come do a job for free, that a deputy should be getting paid for. I’m not gonna have that,” said O’Neal.

O’Neal said he also needs a company vehicle and an office. He said these issues will be resolved during the lawsuit.

Commissioners declined to comment due to pending litigation.
