City Council to vote on downtown development’s ordinance for alcohol sales at Theatre Dublin

DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The latest plans for historic Theatre Dublin include an ordinance to allow special event alcohol sales and plans to install a forty by forty foot viewing screen.

“Over the last five years our leadership has made incremental changes in the way alcohol is dealt with on a local level, where it can be sold, where it can be consumed,” said Downtown Development Authority’s Tara Bradshaw.

The city council has already given the first read to an ordinance that’ll add Theatre Dublin to that list. Bradshaw says she expects it to be a new beginning for the theatre.

“The potential for special event alcohol sales could really drive more foot traffic into downtown we have a lot of great restaurants a lot of great retailers that have located here and we want people to come to the theatre and stay,” Bradshaw continued.

Before the ordinance, Theatre Dublin could serve alcohol for special events but they couldn’t sell it. So, the change could be a benefit to not only the city economically but to anyone wanting to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their movie.

Dublin City Manager Lance Jones says a vote in favor of the ordinance will make visiting the theatre a different experience.

“If somebody was wanting a glass of wine while their watching the Notebook with their date, they could get one, they could do that,” said Jones.

But more than anything, he says, it’ll help downtown Dublin get with the times.

“People kind of expect to be able to get a glass of beer or a glass of wine at events like that. It’ll kind of bring us a little more up to date with everybody else I believe,” he added.

Dublin City Council will vote on the ordinance on Thursday at their next meeting. Anyone in support of or against the ordinance is asked to attend the meeting which begins at 5:30, so they can voice any concerns, questions or comments before the vote.
