Board of Elections Mixup Causes Bibb Voters to Register in Wrong Districts
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A major mixup at the Bibb County Board of Elections causes nearly 800 voters to register in the wrong district, and those who already early voted cannot vote again.
41NBC confirmed that information with Elections Supervisor Jeanetta Watson Thursday afternoon. Watson says when the elections office sent out registration forms to District 2 and 3 voters, there were several streets mapped out in District 2 that should have been in District 3.
In all, 788 voters registered in the wrong district due to the error, and 17 of them have already early voted. Watson says their votes will still count, but they will not be able to cast their ballot again. 771 of them have already been re-registered in the correct district.
“We are sincerely sorry, and the voters being in the wrong district was not done intentionally. We express our sincerest apologies to the voters and the candidates,” Watson told 41NBC’s Ashley Minelli over the phone Thursday.
Watson says the Board of Elections has been in talks with the Georgia Secretary of State’s office and lawyers, who directed them in correcting the problem. Under Georgia law, a voter who has already cast their ballot cannot do so again, according to Watson.
