Southwest High’s Amy Gitschlag named Bibb County Teacher of the Year
Gitschlag has taught at Southwest since 2015 and was chosen from five district finalists.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Southwest High School English language arts teacher Dr. Amy Gitschlag has been named the Bibb County School District’s 2026-27 Teacher of the Year.
The district announced the honor Thursday during its convocation marking the start of the new school year.
Gitschlag has 25 years of teaching experience and has worked at Southwest since 2015.
“Few things are more meaningful to me than when former students or parents—sometimes a decade later—stop me in public to recall a lesson, project, or experience from my classroom,” Gitschlag said. “Those moments affirm my belief that meaningful teaching leaves a lasting imprint, and they continue to inspire my work every day.”
The district selected five finalists from its school-level Teachers of the Year based on written applications. The finalists then completed interviews during the summer.
The other finalists were Brandis Baines of Ingram-Pye Elementary School, Patricia Baser of Vineville Academy, Dr. Vincent Youngbauer of Central High School and Gervon Pryce of Rutland High School.
