Macon-Bibb to host tailgaters at Central City Park

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County is gearing up for football this fall.

Crews are putting the finishing touches on a new venue for fans where they’ll be able to root for their favorite team without making the drive to the stadium.

“Doc” Dougherty with Macon-Bibb Parks and Recreation says don’t let the exterior fool you.

“Well by being able to use this United building, we’re able to show events during the day,” Dougherty said.

Inside of building, there’s a 40 foot movie screen and thousands of square feet for fans to root for their favorite teams.

“Once again this building has become a SPLOST project in the making. We were able to purchase this building, which we’re able to do numerous things,” Dougherty said.

There’s even huge industrial cooling fans inside just like you’d see on the sidelines on game day.

The first game the city will host is Georgia vs. Clemson.

Fans can set up, tailgate, and head inside for the big game.

“It’s a free event. Free parking out in the park, set up the grills, enjoy themselves outside, and then be able to come in here free to the event itself and watch the Georgia, Clemson game on a 40 foot movie screen,” Dougherty said.

Officials say they have plans for even more.

“Well we can do things such as ‘Twilight Saturday,’ maybe starting at 10 in the morning, 12 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 4 o’clock having each of the Twilight movies in a series,” he said.

Dougherty says the plan is to create a multipurpose facility that can be used throughout the year, from the Cherry Blossom Festival to book sale events.

“We’ve talked about the possibility of putting artificial turf inside of this room itself,” he said.

He adds the goal is to bring the games to the community, so whether you’re a bulldog, a jacket, or an eagle, you’ll have a place to cheer for your team.

Kickoff for Saturday’s UGA vs. Clemson game is at 5:30 p.m.

Macon-Bibb purchased the old United building about a year ago for $280,000 using SPLOST money.
