Credit Card Fraud: Who’s Spending Your Money?

Milledgeville Police say it’s the largest influx of credit card fraud.

Scam artists are targeting college students to exploit their lack of financial experience.

“So far most of the victims have been college students,” said Milledgeville Chief of Police Woodrow Blue.

Chief Blue believes the fraud could be happening right in front of your own eyes and you may not even know it.

“They’re doing different things over the internet and someone is able to reach into cyber space and grab that information.”

When GCSU student, Erin Williams saw a friend’s Facebook post that said “I’m number 50,” as in the 50th fraud case to be reported, Williams checked her account immediately.

“And so I checked it, and sure enough on Valentine’s day $315 had been spent at Wal-mart.”

More than a hundred cases of credit card fraud have been reported over the last two weeks and the constant variable is students.

Chief Blue says there’s a good possibility that the fraud is happening over an unsecure wi-fi network.

“I’m really nervous to use my credit card now, luckily where I work I get tips so I’ll try and just spend my tip money and use my debit card as seldom as possible,” said Williams.

Williams’ was the 53rd credit card fraud case to be reported.

According to Chief Blue, the investigations are still ongoing and unfortunately there is no set time when all of the cases will be solved.
