Urban Redevelopment Plan To Get Macon Back on Track

Macon City Council members unanimously agreed on a plan to redevelop urban areas in the city Tuesday evening.

The redevelopment plan has been in the works for more than a year now.
The goal is to get rid of blighted properties, have better maintenance and code enforcement, and ultimately create a safer community.

The data used to determine the areas of need came from the 2000 census,
but Macon City Councilman Larry Schlesinger doesn’t think the 2010 census figures will tell them anything they don’t already know.

“I think we need to focus on our neighborhoods and I think that’s going to take the public itself getting involved through neighborhood associations, watch groups,  and neighborhood clean ups will help.”

The plan is a joint effort between the city, Planning and Zoning, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Regional Development Committee.

Councilman Schlesinger says, “I think the public is going to have to be involved in this process if it’s going to work.”
