Middle Georgia Woman Seeks Shelter for Homeless and Offenders

For 25 years, Margaret Flowers of Kathleen has watched her brother Isaiah get recycled through the California prison system.

She knows firsthand it’s difficult for ex-offenders to make it in the real world upon being released from jail. Flowers has decided to take matters into her own hands and wants to make a difference.

“And I think just one piece of me along with many volunteers can help fix at least part of the situation in Middle Georgia.”

Her plan is simple. Flowers wants to help rehab the homeless and former offenders by creating a shelter in Macon. She’s obtained letters of incorporation, has an attorney working on the non-profit process and already has a list of volunteers. However, without a building – she has no shelter.

“…Right now I’m just trying to locate someone that could maybe donate a house or a building.”

She hopes to be able to name the shelter, “Genesis JOY House.” Joy standing for “Jesus,” “Others” and “Yourself.”

“I want people that are really serious about straightening out their lives and becoming productive, self-sufficient members of society.”

Flowers not only wants to help addicts kick the habit, but she wants to introduce them to Christ.
