Mid-Year Financial Review Shows Tough Feedback for Macon

Crunching the budget could be more difficult for the city of Macon.

Macon City Council received the mid-year financial report from interim finance director David Smith.

The economic outlook for the remainder of this year is bleak for Macon.

Property tax revenue is projected to be down five-percent, and sales tax receipts are down from last year as well.

With the addition of the fire, police, and general employee pension plans this year-

the report projects a deficit of around 4-million dollars. Despite the up hill climb, Macon City Councilman Mike Cranford is optimistic for the future.

“I was glad to see that we were going to have about a million dollars in salary savings because that will offset the lost revenue that we are experiencing so far this year. We’re hoping sales tax projections for next will be a little closer on target,” said Cranford.

As of December 31, 2010, the city’s total digest is down 2.39 % from what it was projected to be this time last year.
