Draft Horse Competition Takes Center Stage at Georgia National Fair

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Some might argue that the main events at the Georgia National Fair are the rides and the food, but something else took center stage today.

The annual draft horse competition entertained hundreds of fair visitors, while the livestock was judged on their overall appearance, the length and size of their necks, and the muscles in their posterior.

Judges critiqued each horse by a breed standard. Georgia Draft Horse Association treasurer Carla Beckom says the four main types were represented.

“Draft horses are shown here, which is the percheron. They come in gray, and black. Belgium are the red horses with the blonde mains and tails, and the Shire, and of course everybody is familiar with the Budweiser Clydesdale,” says Beckom.

More than 80 horses were entered into the competition.
