Qualifying Begins for Warner Robins November Elections
WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Qualifying for the upcoming November elections started on Monday in Warner Robins.
After Mayor Chuck Shaheen announced last week, he won’t be running for re-election, qualifying for his seat opened up Monday.
Three of five candidates qualified before 1 p.m.
As the day went on, candidates filed in one by one, paying their fees and shaking hands with their supporters.
Government hopefuls are running for mayor of Warner Robins, as well as city council seats in post one, three, and five.
Candidate Charlie Scott is a former city employee who wants provide peace and harmony for the city. He’s running for the same seat as Mayor Chuck Shaheen who announced earlier this month, he’s running for the post 1 seat in the city council.
“Well this is a free country and people can run for whatever they want to, but I was a little surprised that he asked me in the past over a year ago to run for that office and just before he went on TV he said he was going to run,” Scott said.
“I wouldn’t be in the race if I didn’t feel like I could win,” he said.
Councilman Daron Lee is giving up his current seat to run for mayor of the city. He says his experience will give him the competitive edge.
“I have more education, I have more relationships that are already established, you don’t have to rebuild the relationships, I have the respect of the municipalities that surround the city of Warner Robins as well as the county, as well as the region,” Lee said.
He says he’ll continue to stay committed to serving the city no matter the outcome of the November elections.
“It’s a critical time, we’re not in a place or the city of Warner Robins to actually rebuild a relationship and relearn and re-teach someone in the office of mayor and in politics as well,” Lee said.
Other mayoral candidates who qualified today include former firefighter Randy Toms, and recently retired Public Works director Joe Musselwhite.
Councilman Mike Brashear is expected to qualify for mayor later on this week as well.
