Governor’s Personal Chef Gives Bibb Students Healthier Options

LIZELLA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Some Bibb County students had the opportunity to learn about healthier food options Tuesday when the Governor’s personal chef made a stop in Lizella.

When kids get home from school, the first thing they head for is the refrigerator, and while some go for the chips and soda, Executive Chef Holly Chute is pushing to give them a healthier option when it’s time for a snack.

When you’re in the third and fourth grade like the kids at Skyview Elementary school vegetables aren’t always your friend.

Governor Nathan Deal’s Executive Chef Holly Chute is looking to change that.

“I came down to teach them some healthy snacks and just some ideas that they can take home,” Chute said.

She visited Skyview Elementary School in Bibb County on Tuesday as part of the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s “feed my school for a week” program.

She’s teaching kids they can make easy snacks from locally grown food, like fruit smoothies using Dickey Farm Peaches and a Dirt Salad with homemade ranch dressing.

“Kids don’t realize that they’re getting some healthy food, they’re getting to dip it in the dressing and it looks like a little flower pot when they assemble it,” Chute said.

Dr. Cleta Long is the Director of School Nutrition. She’s assuring parents, her staff is looking to make school lunches using as many fresh low processed foods as possible.

“We want parents to know that we have fresh, quality, ingredients to provide the healthy meals that we have for students each and every day,” Long said.

While kids enjoyed the fresh food, Chef Chute says she wants them to start making healthy eating a routine, so they can have all of the energy they need to get through the day.

“Hopefully they’ll go home and tell their parents that they do it and say mom you know look lets try this and turn it into a habit,” Chute said.

Bibb schools is looking to promote Georgia Grown foods this year and officials want to get more local food in all of their meals.
