New Bibb Sheriff’s Vehicles Set to Hit the Road

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –  Rain didn’t stop the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department from introducing brand new patrol cars.

Sheriff David Davis and Macon’s interim Police Chief Mike Carswell spoke with the media and other officials about the brand new additions to the fleet.

They said the existing cars are wearing down, and the new ones will improve patrolling officers’ performance.

“When you have a car that has 150, 175, 200 thousand miles, the maintenance issues start having problems, you worry about some high speed operations, it gives the officers some confidence it gives him new equipment to be able to do the job,” Davis said.

The vehicles were paid for using SPLOST money. Sheriff Davis told everyone his favorite.

“My favorite overall is the one that cost the least.

When the Macon and Bibb County government consolidate, 184 squad cars from the Macon Police Department will need to be restriped, removing the words “POLICE” and replacing them with “SHERIFF” to show that cars won’t just serve Macon but all of Bibb County.

“We have a system set up to do that, we have some inmate labor, we have a person on staff, that’s going to coordinate the remarking of police cars at a minimum cost,” Davis said.

Chief Carswell says the cars are a milestone on the road to consolidation.

“Technology and new equipment is always good for morale and also if you’ll notice the similar designs, it’s very indicative of what’s taking place, you see two great agencies merging together to become one super agency,” Carswell said.

After the rescheduling the event more than once, Sheriff Davis says these cards are ready to hit the road.

“Any time we hold them is the time that they’re not out there doing the job that there supposed to be doing.”
