Peach Festival 2013: Georgians Celebrate Roots and State Fruit

BYRON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – From the eastern part of the state to the most eastern part of the world; people from all walks of life traveled to get a taste of the state’s sweet treat at the 27th annual Georgia Peach Festival.

Tejie Sahni brought friends from India to discover what makes a Georgia peach so sweet. He decided to go straight to the source by visiting the large peach farms in Peach County.

“We saw the packaging and all that,” Sahni said, “it was most interesting. The peach ice cream is delicious.”

Sahni is one of 10,000 visitors traveling to Byron and Fort Valley to see the fruits of Georgia’s labor. The week-long festival will end in Fort Valley on June 8 with the “World’s Largest Peach Cobbler.”

The state fruit graces license plates, signs, water towers and more; over half of the peaches that inspire it all are grown in Peach County. For many Georgians, a summer is simply not complete without a Georgia peach.

“I love to see the peaches on the shelves,” said Cathy Stephens, “the first peach means that summer it here.”
