MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A Macon church is asking the Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning Commission for approval to build a 150-foot cross off Bass Road.

According to newly posted draft agenda documents for the commission’s June 22 hearing, Rock Springs Congregational Methodist Church has filed a conditional use application for the property at 1415 Bass Road.

Planning documents describe the proposal as a “150-foot-tall cross” that would serve as a “prominent community landmark.”

According to the application, the cross would sit on a semi-circular concrete base measuring about 70 feet wide and 40 feet deep. The proposal also includes a new 10-space parking area, a handicap-accessible ramp and upgrades to an existing walkway on the property. The cross would include exterior lighting designed to minimize glare and reduce impacts on nearby properties.

Renderings included with the filing compare the proposed cross to the church’s existing steeple and show the structure extending above the current sanctuary.
