JEFFERSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Dozens of arrests were made during a weekend DUI enforcement operation in Twiggs CountY.

In a news release Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said “Operation Wrong Exit” was held on March 13 and 14 with the goal of removing impaired drivers from the road and reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities.

According to the sheriff’s office, the operation resulted in 38 total arrests, including 17 felony arrests.

On Monday, deputies said one of the arrests happened after a high-speed chase that ended in a crash.

Deputies reported 25 DUI contacts with eight DUI arrests. They also cited nine seat belt violations and 11 child seat violations, with new child safety seats provided in those cases.

According to deputies, two wanted fugitives were caught. The operation also resulted in eight open container violations and 13 cases involving suspended licenses.

There were 17 felony drug arrests involving substances including marijuana, fentanyl, cocaine, ecstasy, controlled substance pills and promethazine. An additional 40 citations were issued for other offenses, deputies said.

The operation involved about 80 law enforcement officers and included assistance from multiple agencies, including the Georgia State Patrol, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s Middle Georgia Enforcement Network and several local law enforcement departments.

“Our main goal is to save lives, and if even one life is saved, it has all been worth it,” Sheriff Darren Mitchum said in the release.
