Michigan health officials have reported the first two deaths linked to this summer's Cyclospora outbreak as the number of cases in the state surpasses 11,000.

(CNN)- Michigan health officials have reported the first two deaths linked to this summer’s Cyclospora outbreak as the number of cases in the state surpasses 11,000.

According to state officials, both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Medical experts say deaths from the parasite are rare. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said both people became ill before Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce grown in Mexico on July 17.

Federal health officials say Cyclospora cases have now been reported in 45 states and that investigators are examining six outbreak clusters. The largest cluster is linked to Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce that was served at Taco Bell restaurants in nine states.

Both Taylor Farms and Taco Bell say they stopped using the recalled lettuce last month.

While cases continue to rise nationwide, Michigan officials say the pace of new infections has begun to slow. Investigators are also looking beyond lettuce. In North Carolina, health officials say some recent patients reported eating parsley and cilantro before becoming ill as the investigation continues.
