Hollywood Minute: “Marty Supreme” scores best per-theater average as Netflix renews hit series

A strong debut and major streaming news are highlighting a busy week in entertainment.

(CNN)- The new drama Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, delivered an impressive limited opening at the box office. The film debuted in ninth place with $875,000 in ticket sales while playing in just six theaters nationwide. That translates to an average of nearly $146,000 per screen — the highest per-theater average of any film released this year. The movie is set to expand into wide release on Thursday, December 25.

Meanwhile, Netflix is doubling down on one of its newest international hits. The streaming service has renewed the action series Last Samurai Standing for a second season. Netflix says the show, which premiered last month, has already cracked the platform’s top 10 rankings in 88 countries, signaling strong global viewership.

In music and film crossover news, Miley Cyrus is set to receive special recognition for her song “Dream As One,” featured in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The Palm Springs International Film Festival announced it will honor Cyrus with its Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award. The ceremony is scheduled for January 3 in Palm Springs, California.
