17-year-old arrested, charged after stabbing at Southwest High School
41NBC has confirmed Christopher Maloy, 17, is facing three charges in connection with the incident
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged after a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office incident report says one student stabbed another with scissors at Southwest High School Aug. 31.
17-year-old Christopher Maloy is charged with aggravated assault, preventing or disrupting a lawful meeting and criminal street gang activity.
The Bibb County School District has described the incident as isolated.
According to an incident report from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the stabbing happened during lunch inside the school cafeteria.
The report says the student who was attacked had previously told school staff that he was being targeted by another student.
According to the report, the student’s class and homeroom were changed after he notified a teacher about the situation.
The report says the two students later encountered each other at school. The victim told investigators another student approached him, and an altercation eventually began in the cafeteria.
The report says the the student accused of the attack was using a pair of scissors to stab the victim.
A deputy who responded later noted that the victim had broken skin from small lacerations.
41NBC first learned about the incident after a concerned parent contacted the newsroom.
After the initial report, the Bibb County School District did not make anyone available for an interview.
However, Superintendent Dr. Dan Sims responded after 41NBC published its story online, describing the situation as an “unfortunate incident” and saying school personnel and school resource officers responded appropriately.
Sims said school continued after the incident and that, at no time, were other students at risk of harm.
He also said the incident was isolated and involved the students identified by school officials.
The superintendent said the district does not tolerate violence and will continue to hold students responsible for their actions under the district’s code of conduct.
Parents were initially told it was an altercation
On the day of the incident, the school district sent a message to parents through ParentSquare.
The message described the incident as an altercation and an isolated incident.
Now that the sheriff’s office has confirmed the incident involved a stabbing, 41NBC is seeking additional information about how the school district communicates with parents and the public about incidents involving student safety.
41NBC has submitted an open records request to the Bibb County School District seeking additional information about the incident and the district’s response.
The district has not yet responded to that request.
