(NBC)- Authorities in Mississippi are investigating a string of deadly shootings that unfolded over the weekend, leaving multiple communities reeling from violence.
In the small town of Leland, chaos erupted Friday night following a homecoming football game. Police say six people were killed in a shooting on Main Street as crowds were leaving post-game celebrations.
FBI officials said, “People who were enjoying themselves last night found themselves faced with violence that no community should be faced with.”
Victims ranged in age from 18 to 41. The suspect remains at large as investigators continue searching for the gunman. Leland’s mayor pleaded with residents to come forward.
Mayor: “This is not a time to keep your mouth closed. It’s a time you open your mouth. You can save a lot of lives if you open your mouth and tell us what you have seen.”
Elsewhere in the state, two people were killed during another shooting Friday night at a high school football game in Heidelberg. Authorities say one of the victims was pregnant. An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested.
And in Rolling Fork, a third shooting occurred outside a local football game, where police arrested two people in connection with the incident.
As investigators work across three crime scenes, Leland’s mayor urged residents to come together.
Mayor: “Please pray for Leland, Mississippi. Pray for your city, and let’s pray for this country.”
