Labor Day travel outlook: Drivers urged to prepare as holiday traffic increases

Bibb County deputies expect more traffic on Middle Georgia interstates and will increase patrols during the Labor Day weekend.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – For many people, Labor Day weekend means one last trip before the summer comes to an end.

But with more people traveling, local law enforcement is reminding drivers to prepare before getting behind the wheel.

Captain Scott Davis with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says traffic is expected to increase across Middle Georgia, especially on Interstates 16, 75 and 475.

The sheriff’s office will also increase patrols throughout the holiday weekend. Davis says deputies will be watching for aggressive and impaired drivers, as well as other unsafe driving behaviors.

“Every holiday, every day, the aggressive driving behavior we observe we try to address that within the traffic division and patrol,” Davis said.

AAA reports that more than 400,000 drivers needed roadside assistance during last year’s Labor Day holiday period. Common issues included dead batteries, flat tires, lockouts and towing.

Davis recommends drivers check their oil, fuel and tires before leaving, especially if they are planning an extended trip.

Drivers traveling through Bibb County also say traffic has been manageable so far.

Shawn Hillengas said traffic has been moving well, although he has noticed a larger law enforcement presence.

“Not too bad, been moving pretty well. A lot of cops, though,” Hillengas said.

Dora Parra said traffic has also been mostly smooth, with some slowdowns in larger cities.

James Bottoms said one area of concern is construction along Interstate 475.

“It’s been okay, except where they are working on the road, 475. Everybody tries to squeeze into the barrels. It’s sort of scary,” Bottoms said.

Davis is also reminding drivers about Georgia’s Move Over Law.

If drivers see law enforcement or emergency crews stopped on the shoulder with their lights activated, they must move over if possible and slow down.

Davis says drivers should give emergency crews and roadside assistance workers enough room to safely do their jobs.

AAA also encourages travelers to allow extra time for their trips and avoid afternoon departures when possible.

Davis says the best way to have a safe holiday weekend is to plan ahead, stay alert and never drive impaired.
