GDC: Central State Prison inmate dies after altercation

Central State Prison inmate Leon Kelly died on December 9 following an altercation with another inmate.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Central State Prison inmate Leon Kelly died Monday following an altercation with another inmate.

“We can confirm the death of Central SP inmate Leon Kelly (GDC# 786045) December 9 following an altercation with another inmate,” Georgia Department of Corrections spokesperson Joan Heath wrote in an email.

Macon-Bibb Coroner Leon Jones says Kelly had multiple stab wounds.

Both Jones and Heath said the body will be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) crime lab to determine the official cause of death.

The death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards as standard procedure. Additional details are not available as the investigation is ongoing.

According to Heath, Kelly was serving 10 years for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine out of Putnam County with a maximum release date of 2033.
