WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) and Houston Healthcare are both mourning the loss of Roy H. “Sonny” Watson Jr., who died Tuesday at the age of 86.

Watson was a “community stalwart,” according to a CGTC news release, and was a vital figure in local governance, healthcare, education and business.

He made significant contributions to CGTC, including the development of the Warner Robins campus in the mid-90s.

The school’s new wellness complex, home to the college’s football and soccer teams, was named in his honor in 2023.

“Watson and his family attended a dedication ceremony in September of 2023 receiving recognition for the many contributions he has made to the College and to the Community,” the CGTC news release said.

CGTC’s Health Sciences building also bears his name.

“This building stands tall in the community, just as Watson did, and is a fitting tribute to the legacy of support for healthcare and education that he leaves behind,” the CGTC release added.

At Houston Healthcare, Watson served on the Houston County Hospital Authority and as Chairman of Houston Healthcare System Inc. His 18-year tenure saw key expansions and improvements.

“His legacy is deeply ingrained in the organization,” a Houston Healthcare news release said.

His public service includes serving 17 years as Clerk and Administrator for Houston County and 22 years in the Georgia Legislature. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Museum of Aviation.

“In recognition of his outstanding service, facilities such as the Roy H. “Sonny” Watson Boardroom, Roy H. “Sonny” Watson Health Pavilion, and the Roy H. “Sonny” Watson Health Science Building and Wellness Complex stand as testaments to his legacy,” the Houston Healthcare release said.
