Windsor prepares to face defending champ in finals

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Windsor baseball team cruised past Robert Toombs in the state semifinals, beating the Crusaders by a combined score of 19-4 in two games.

This weekend, the Knights will play for a state championship when they visit Monticello to face defending champ Piedmont in the GISA AA finals.

Tuesday, the team traded the diamond for the hardwood. That’s right–baseball in the gym. Storms moved through at the start of practice.

“Today we can get some work in,” says head coach Tyler Brown, who led Windsor’s softball team to the AA title last year. “We’ll get our bunts going, a little tee work. After we get everybody cleared off, we’ll send the outfielders home and get some infield work in. Nobody likes to be cooped up in the gym, but other than that, it’s a good day.”

Brown did say he’s looking forward to a productive day outside Wednesday.

Game 1 is Friday at 4. The Knights will bat against Piedmont’s Zach Beggs, a senior, who’s committed to Young Harris.

“He’ll be a guy that if we can beat him, we’ll look really good,” Brown says. “We’ve just got to battle him. Then they’ve got a nice lefty coming in after him.”

Game 2 is Saturday at 1 with Game 3, if needed, to follow.

“We’re just gonna try to put the ball in play and play hard,” Brown says. “We don’t have anybody on our team that’s hitting .480 with 10 bombs (laughing). Everybody just does their job.”
