Warner Robins runner has sight set on Boston finish line, again

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — It’s the runners high, that keeps Rob Shugart’s feet moving with ease.

“You just feel better, you sleep better at night,” said Shugart.

26.2 miles.

Shugart can cross that distance off his bucket list five times over, but marathon number six is a do-over of sorts.

“I knew ever since last year right after everything happened that I wanted to go back again,” said Shugart.

The finish line in Boston was already behind Shugart when the first bomb went off. Still, the horrifying events of that day triumphed over his personal victory.

“Before she told us that it was really euphoric… We were about halfway to the hotel when a lady on the van with us got a text from someone she knew down there, telling us, or telling her what had happened,” said Shugart.

At that moment his mind raced back to his fellow runners, members of the Macon Tracks Running club, who were also in Boston on April 15, 2013, much like him with one goal in sight.

“We still talk about the experience and talk about going back again this year, and everybody seems to have the same outlook I do.”

His outlook is not fear or anger, because for people like Shugart, last year’s tragedy brought out strength.

“It’s only human that it’s in the back of your mind, But I know I can honestly say, I’m not nervous. Now, when I get to the starting line, who’s to say I’m not going to be nervous but I’m just, just the thrill of being able to do it again is what I’m looking forward to.”

A true example of Boston strong.
