Virginia scores 6 runs in last inning to beat Georgia 8-7, advance to region title game
Drew Larsen’s bases-loaded double to left field brought home Liam Deegan for the winning run. All of Virginia’s sixth inning runs were scored with two outs.
Georgia’s Brent Epps pitched a terrific game, striking out eight batters in four innings. From the plate, he added a third inning solo home run to break a 1-1 tie. Zachary Garcia pitched 1 1/3 inning in relief but was replaced by Jagger Smith after Virginia started its last inning rally. Smith took the loss.
Georgia led 1-0 after the first, but Virginia tied it in the second. Epps’ third inning homerun gave Georgia the 2-1 lead. Smith then added an RBI on a double to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the third, Virginia scored a run to make it 3-2.
Georgia added three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth before Virginia’s rally.
Bryce Safferwich got the win for Virginia, who advances to Friday’s region championship game against Tennessee. First pitch is at 7.
