UPDATE: Vineville Avenue reopens

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says Vineville Avenue is now open after being shut down since Monday.

The Georgia Department of Transportation had hoped to have it open by 5 a.m. Thursday morning, and achieved the goal.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to thank everyone who was patient and used the detours to get around the sinkhole.


MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia Department of Transportation officials hope Vineville Avenue will reopen early Thursday morning.

GDOT says the sinkhole repair should be completed and the road should be open to traffic by 5 a.m. Transportation officials anticipate it will take that long for the concrete to cure in the area that has been repaired.

There are two detours set up around the sinkhole: inbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Desoto Place and outbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Pio Nono Avenue.


MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb Sheriff’s Office says part of Vineville Avenue will remain closed as crews repair a sinkhole.

Authorities say the area near the 2800 block of Vineville Avenue will stay closed Tuesday and most of Wednesday.

Kimberly Larson with the Georgia Department of Transportation says there was a storm drain under the road that no one knew was there. Larson tells with 41NBC over time, the pipe failed, causing erosion under the road and the asphalt broke to make a sinkhole.

According to Larson, crews dug up a 20x20x12 feet deep hole to get to the pipe. They’re digging the pipe up, putting a new one in, and then filling the hole with concrete.

There are two detours set up around the sinkhole: inbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Desoto Place and outbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Pio Nono Avenue.

Authorities say the road will probably open late Wednesday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office is warning commuters of possible delays due to the detour.

It happened in the 2800 block of Vineville Avenue Monday afternoon.

Bibb sheriff’s Deputies set up two detours. Inbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Desoto Place. Outbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Pio Nono Avenue.

Drivers are asked to prepare for possible delays.

Deputies say the road could open mid to late Tuesday morning.
