Tucker’s Pick ‘Em: College football picks and previews for Week 12
Record last week: 6-5
Record this year: 88-34
(ALL TIMES EASTERN)
No. 19 Clemson (7-2, 6-1 ACC) at No. 22 Georgia Tech (8-2, 5-2 ACC)
Both the Tigers and Yellow Jackets are second place in their divisions and face a must-win situation for a shot at the ACC title.
Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson will be back in the lineup after missing three games with an injured hand. Before the Gainesville, Ga. native got hurt, he had thrown 12 touchdown passes in three games.
He and the Tigers will have to outscore the Jackets’, who seem to have just hit their stride:
Georgia Tech 24, Clemson 21
Actual Score: Georgia Tech 28, Clemson 6 (WIN)
South Carolina (4-5, 2-5 SEC) at Florida (5-3, 4-3 SEC)
Saturday, November 15 at 12 p.m. ESPN
Coach Steve Spurrier returns to Gainesville to face Will Muschamp’s Gators.
Muschamp needs this win more than Spurrier. The latter is nearing retirement, while the former is fighting for his job.
A win over the Gamecocks would make the Gators bowl eligible.
You have to like their chances. Since freshman quarterback Treon Harris took charge, they’ve won two straight:
Florida 28, South Carolina 17
Actual Score: South Carolina 23, Florida 20 – OT (LOSS)
Warner (5-4) at Mercer (5-5, 1-5 SoCon)
Saturday, November 15 at 2 p.m. ESPN3
Mercer plays its last home game against the Warner Royals, an NAIA team from Florida.
If the Bears don’t get caught sleeping, this game should be similar to last year’s, when Mercer rolled up 570 yards on its way to a 61-0 win:
Mercer 49, Warner 10
Actual Score: Mercer 56, Warner 0 (WIN)
Northwestern (3-6, 2-4 Big Ten) at No. 18 Notre Dame (7-2)
Saturday, November 15 at 3:30 p.m. 41NBC
Notre Dame took a tough hit in the poll after last week’s loss at Arizona State, but it still has a chance to play in a top-tier bowl game.
Quarterback Everett Golson has to hold on to the football. Last week against the Sun Devils, he turned it over five times in a 55-31 loss, despite throwing for 446 yards and two touchdowns.
The Irish should take care of business against the Wildcats, who have lost four straight after starting the year 3-2:
Notre Dame 42, Northwestern 24
Actual Score: Northwestern 43, Notre Dame 40 – OT (LOSS)
Georgia Southern (8-2, 7-0 Sun Belt) at Navy (4-5)
Saturday, November 15 at 3:30 p.m. CBS SPORTS NETWORK
Georgia Southern takes a step out of conference play for a road game at Navy.
It’s a chance for the Eagles, who are undefeated in their first season in the Sun Belt, to gain a signature win.
They lost games earlier this season at NC State and Georgia Tech by a combined five points:
Georgia Southern 41, Navy 38
Actual Score: Navy 52, Georgia Southern 19 (LOSS)
No. 1 Mississippi State (9-0, 5-0 SEC) @ No. 5 Alabama (8-1, 5-1 SEC)
Saturday, November 15 at 3:30 p.m. CBS
The No. 1 team in the land visits Tuscaloosa in this mid-November top 5 showdown.
We know Mississippi State’s offense will be able to score. The player to watch is Alabama quarterback Blake Sims, who’s been a much better player at home:
Alabama 31, Mississippi State 21
Actual Score: Alabama 25, Mississippi State 20 (WIN)
Kentucky (5-5, 2-5) at Tennessee (4-5, 1-4 SEC)
Saturday, November 15 at 4 p.m. SEC NETWORK
The Wildcats and Volunteers meet for the 110 time Saturday in Knoxville.
A Tennessee win would make the team 5-5 through 10 games for the first time in five years. A Tennessee loss would put it in danger of missing a bowl for the fourth straight year.
The Vols have a solid history against the Wildcats. They’ve won 28 of the last 29:
Tennessee 31, Kentucky 28
Actual Score: Tennessee 50, Kentucky 16 (WIN)
No. 9 Auburn (7-2, 4-2 SEC) at No. 15 Georgia (7-2, 5-2 SEC)
Saturday, November 15 at 7:15 p.m. ESPN
Georgia runningback Todd Gurley makes his return in a game that could be one of the best of the year. That is, if you like a lot of points.
Both defenses have been unable to stop anyone lately, while the offenses have been explosive. Georgia averages 43 points a game. Auburn averages 39.
Gurley is expected to have a big day, but Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall is too. The senior from Pineview, Ga., who started his career as a cornerback at UGA before being kicked off the team, makes his return to Athens.
His experience in close games will push the Tigers past the Bulldogs:
Auburn 42, Georgia 38
Actual Score: Georgia 34, Auburn 7 (LOSS)
Missouri (7-2, 4-1 SEC) at No. 24 Texas A&M (7-3, 3-3 SEC)
Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. SEC NETWORK
Missouri isn’t getting much publicity, but it could still win the SEC East. At 4-1 in conference play, all it has to do is win out.
That will be much easier said than done. They have a road game in College Station before another next week in Knoxville.
They’ll close out their season at home against Arkansas:
Texas A&M 27, Missouri 21
Actual Score: Missouri 34, Texas A&M 27 (LOSS)
No. 3 Florida State (9-0, 6-0) at Miami (6-3, 3-2 ACC)
Saturday, November 15 at 8 p.m. ABC
The Seminoles were dropped to No. 3 this week, despite not having a loss.
They dropped because they haven’t been impressive. They’ll have to be in this rivalry game against the Hurricanes or they’ll drop even further after a loss:
Florida State 38, Miami 33
Actual Score: Florida State 30, Miami 26 (WIN)
No. 17 LSU (7-3, 3-3 SEC) at Arkansas (4-5, 0-5 SEC)
Saturday, November 15 at 8 p.m. ESPN2
The Battle for the Golden Boot is Arkansas’ last chance for an SEC win.
Throw out the records when these two get together. The Razorbacks will win a close one:
Arkansas 24, LSU 20
Actual Score: Arkansas 17, LSU 0 (WIN)
