(NBC)- President Trump wrapped up three days of diplomacy at the G7 summit while defending a proposed framework for peace with Iran and facing growing calls from lawmakers for more information about the agreement.
Trump met with G7 allies and leaders from developing nations before signaling he planned to publicly discuss the details of the agreement.
“I’ll probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word,” the president said.
Despite the administration’s optimism, congressional leaders from both parties said they have not yet been briefed on the proposed deal.
“I certainly have not yet, although we are requesting that,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the lack of information, saying, “He needs to stop keeping America in the dark.”
According to Trump, the memorandum of understanding would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, exclude U.S. investments in Iran and guarantee that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and toll-free.
“We’re going to have it fully open by Friday,” Trump said.
One fuel-tracking service already shows the national average price for gasoline falling below four dollars per gallon. However, industry experts caution that shipping operations may take weeks to fully return to normal.
Several major issues remain unresolved, including the details of Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Even so, Trump expressed confidence the agreement is nearly complete.
“It’s going to be back in the rear-view mirror,” he said.
The president also signaled a renewed focus on the war in Ukraine after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the summit. The meeting came as Russia launched attacks that reportedly damaged a centuries-old monastery.
Back in the United States, the FBI announced that law enforcement officers foiled an alleged attack targeting a UFC event held on the White House lawn Sunday night.
Authorities arrested five people accused of plotting to use explosives-laden drones and firearms against attendees, including President Trump.
As negotiations continue, the administration is seeking to turn recent military confrontations into a broader diplomatic agreement while addressing ongoing security challenges at home and abroad.
