Thieves steal light pole copper wire for quick cash

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Thieves have been stealing copper wire, used to provide electricity to light poles, up and down Interstate 75.

Macon-Bibb County Deputy Director of Facilities Management Earnest Queen says the city has paid more than 35 thousand for 42 thousand feet of wire cooper.

That does not include the cost of man power which Queen says triples the amount of tax dollars used for repairs.

“If it wasn’t for these people stealing, we would be able to maintain other parts of Macon,” Queen said. “It is a hassle we have to deal with, that’s costing tax payers.”

Macon-Bibb investigators have one copper thief suspect in custody.

They are also looking for another person of interest.

If you see someone that is not affiliated with Macon-Bibb County facilities management please call the Bibb-County Sheriffs.
