State Senator David Lucas hosts Veteran’s Health Fair

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – More than 50  Middle Georgia veterans received information about services they need Friday.

State Senator David Lucas (D) District 26 hosted the Veteran Health Fair at the Buck Melton Center.

Donald Merriweather was among the crowd.

Merriweather has served in the Army National Guard since 1984.

He says he came to the health fair Friday to find a less expensive health insurance company and says he was fascinated to meet other veterans.

“It’s wonderful to be here,” says Merriweather. “It makes me feel good that I served with some great people of the United States of America.”

Lucas hosted the event, which featured various vendors offering information about mental health services, Caregiver Support Program, Women’s Health Clinic and the Wounded Warrior Project.

“We’re here because veterans need help, and I found that out by my office being contacted by a wife of a veteran who had problems and I didn’t know exactly what to tell her,” says Lucas.

The purpose of the health fair is to educate veterans about benefits and services available through the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to Lucas.

Brian Faulds represents an organization called Central Georgia Homefront.

He says the health fair allowed his organization to tell veterans about getting help from different places.

“We can provide these organizations to the veterans as some place to go to get their needs met–for example housing,” says Faulds.

Attendees say they hope more health fairs will be held in the future.
