State House of Representatives passes firework bill

ATLANTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Senate is considering a bill that would legalize fireworks in the Peach State.

The House of Representatives passed House Bill 110 last week. The bill would legalize the sale of fireworks in Georgia. Under current law, sparklers are the only type of fireworks sold in the state.

Supporters feel Georgia is losing revenue to surrounding states that sell fireworks. Opponents are skeptical children will get hurt because they don’t know how to properly use them.

Health officials at Medical Center, Navicent Health say they see most firework injuries around New Year’s and Fourth of July.

“Your most common injuries are going to be on the hands and the face. You’re going to get anywhere between first, second, and third degree burns,” ER Physician Dennis Holder said.

Holder adds children are usually the ones coming into the ER with firework related injuries.
