Senior Christmas Luncheon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Macon-Bibb County hosted it’s annual Senior Christmas Luncheon at the Centreplex Thursday. Laughs and holiday cheer and more than 500 people filled the convention center.

The seniors from various churches, nursing home and areas in Macon came out to enjoy a free lunch provided by Macon-Bibb County.

The county partnered with AARP to not only fill seniors’  bellies, but their hearts too.

“We put it in our budget every year to make this happen,” said Mayor Robert Reichart’s Executive Assistant, Sam Henderson.

For most seniors, it was more than just a free meal. It was a chance to connect with others and celebrate life during the holiday season.

“I think that being able to get out, see your friends out with you, be able to associate and talk with them and enjoy a great meal, I think it lifts their spirits tremendously,” said Henderson.

Among the many bright spirits, was 104 year-old, Wilella Thomas. She’s attended the luncheon for many years and says it’s a blessing.

“I just look over and see all these beautiful people and all the colors and everything,” Thomas said. “It’s one of the best organizations you could have.”

Mayor Reichart was also part of the crowd. He and the county were presented with an award from the World Health Organization and AARP for continuing to be an age friendly community.
