Residents in Milledgeville drive-by shooting speak on rise in violent crimes

Milledgeville, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Detectives with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office are trying to piece together what happened in not one but two shootings last night.  Residents say they’re fed up.

Two shootings reported within an hour of each other last night in Milledgeville. The crime scenes–just a seven minute drive from one to the other.

“This is so called Fifth Street–a lot of activity happens over this way. I’m not going to say what kind of activity but if you read your paper you ought to know,” said resident Ronald Hurt.

Deputies first responded to a drive-by shooting on 5th Street just after 10:00 PM where shots were fired at a residence–and later gunshots fired into a woman’s car leaving her with a wound to the leg.

“You never know who’s next . These young people these days–what made them snap? You just don’t know,” said Hurt.

He says he had just gotten back to the house from Coliseum Medical in Macon when he heard gun shots flying through his friend’s home.

“I was sitting on the back porch smoking a cigarette when I heard the car drive down the road and stop right in front of the house and 14 shots rang through the house. I said I can’t believe this house getting shot up,” he said.

Captain Brad King with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office says they don’t believe the two incidents are related but they are both apart of a rise in violent crimes they’ve seen in Millidgeville.

“We’ve been targeted now. You’ll never know what activity may have brought this on…maybe they had the wrong house or you’ll never know,” Hurt continued.

He says he doesn’t know who did it or why but their previous plans to move out of the area–riddled with drugs and gun violence–are now a top priority.

“He’s a good guy and I just can’t see why? Him and his old lady stay here with his mother. It just shouldn’t happen to such good people,” he said.

Though there were several people in the house at the time of the shooting no one was hurt. The woman whose car was shot at is at Navicent Health in stable condition.
